Coffee
And why it's so important to me
Coffee is a good metaphor for a person. Not simply through the way one takes their coffee, but also because it undergoes so many levels of transformation before reaching its full potential.
It is harvested, processed, roasted, blended, ground, filtered, and recycled.
As we are.
We are, as adults, the result of so many transformative experiences, from the first scraped knee to the last heartbreak.
Coffee can be served in so many different ways, from so many different blends, and like coffee, we are all very different and with varying degrees of drinkability. As in, some people are way too sour for most people’s tastes.
I take mine dark, with two sugars. Simple, efficient, easy to drink. Hot. I don’t like iced coffee, for some reason.
I like my people the same way: dark yet warm, sweet, and simple.
My life has been more eventful than most, so I enjoy calm and simplicity. Coffee helps me cool down and focus. Hence why I drink so much of it.
If I offer you coffee, I’ve accepted you.
Coffee is a journey, from the harvest of the beans to the drinking itself. So is life, from birth to the end. It doesn’t have to be lonely, you can drink a coffee with a friend, a lover, a family member, any loved one or even an unloved one.
You’ll encounter many different blends along the way and won’t enjoy them all, but keep tasting and testing until you find the one that seems to fit in the moment. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to want to try different flavours, add some milk or cream or sugar, try it iced or burning, hell you can even drink tea every now and then. It’s all right.
Coffee won’t mind.
Coffee has been my comfort drink for years. I would grab one for every emotion, and sometimes for dissociation as well. It grounds me (pun intended) and helps me feel more like myself.
At some point I survived solely on it, drinking 6 to 8 a day, eating only one meal. That did wonders for my heart as you can imagine. I try to drink less now. Like everything, it’s a matter of balance.
If you do too much at once in life, you won’t be able to hold the distance. The more you try to do at the same time, the more difficult each task will be. You have to learn to take your time and prioritise your own health and well-being.
If a bunch of extra sour beans can end up tasting so good, you can transform into the wonderful person you want to be as well. Remember, it’s all about the process. It takes time and care, a cautious mix of things and blends to make good coffee.
You are a mix of a lot of things too, be they good or less good.
